Knox replaced the phone into its cradle on his desk and smiled.
Eva and Nathan had been located in a town outside Grenoble, based upon Miles’s own assertion that keeping Crowe’s access codes operational would prove too tempting to the fugitives.
And, if Eva and Nathan were in Grenoble, then Decker and the twins couldn’t be far away.
Eva would never let the boy out of her sight for long – it was against her programmed protocols.
For all the good the black ops team Eva had belonged to had done, the fact remained that it left them predictable, and therefore vulnerable.
It was why she was the only one left.
Three years on her own had evidently resulted in Eva’s boredom leading to her educating herself in tactical manoeuvres that had never been taught to the close-knit team, and he suspected Decker was responsible.
He allowed himself one consolation. At least he’d had the foresight to erase all information about the operation from three years ago from Nathan’s access rights, leaving only the reports that would pique Eva’s interest while allowing him to remain in control of the situation.
He had to.
If he believed for one moment that the whole project was unravelling, or showed his hand too soon, everything he had worked for would be destroyed.
Knox made his way across to a small cabinet next to the bombproof safe in the corner of the room, slid open the door, and extracted the crystal tumbler and a bottle of thirty-year-old single malt.
Pouring a generous measure, he returned to his chair and sank into it, a sigh escaping his lips.
He savoured the first taste of the amber liquid, enjoying the gentle burn that enveloped his throat, then placed the glass on the desk and rubbed a hand over tired eyes.
He’d thought that by keeping the team small, he’d be able to avoid the problems normally associated with such a clandestine operation.
The shooting in Berlin had been an unwelcome reminder that, in this job, nothing was ever certain.
Thankfully, the Section’s media relations team had worked tirelessly behind the scenes, and now ninety per cent of the world’s media outlets were reporting it as one of many lone terrorist cell incidents that was sweeping the continent.
On the other media reports, he kept a close watch.
Conspiracy theorists were often laughed at, but if the general public knew how close those stories were to the truth, it could feasibly destroy the British government and its allies.
He picked up a report from the set of trays next to his computer monitor, and leafed through the contents.
Miles Newcombe was a diligent analyst, brought in-house to train a select group of graduates Knox had hand-picked to work in the Section and fresh out of university.
After intensive training, Miles had been sent out into the field, first in Europe and then as a lone operative looking after the Section’s Venezuelan interests. In recent years, when things had started to heat up there and rumours abounded about CIA involvement as the regime began to collapse, Miles had been brought back to London.
